JBS Australia Grain Milling Facility

Client: JBS Australia Pty Limited
Scope overview: Design, procure, install and startup a turnkey plant for grain steeping and steam milling

Project Description

Grain Milling Facility upgrade improves efficiency and profitability at JBS Australia Feedlot

CLIENT

JBS Australia Pty Limited is a division of JBS, Brazil’s largest multinational in the food sector, and the world’s largest meat company.

JBS Australia has an extensive presence along the eastern seaboard, with a number of domestic and globally recognised brand names including AMH, King Island Beef, Royal, Swift Premium, Tasman Meats and Tasmanian Premium Beef.

OBJECTIVES

JBS Australia contracted Wiley to undertake the design, procurement, installation and startup of a turnkey plant for grain steeping and steam milling at a feedlot operating at a current level of 35,000 head.

A requirement of the process was the facility to make batches of Premix feed additive at reduced cost and providing complete flexibility of recipe.

CHALLENGES

  • Coordination of the design of the new plant to achieve the stated objectives and to operate together with the existing equipment.
  • Upgrade of the existing process control system to integrate into the new SCADA to be installed as part of the upgrade.
  • Completing the installation and start up without affecting the operation of the existing feed system.
  • Management of the project on a remote site–with particular emphasis on safe working at the high levels of some of the new equipment.

SOLUTIONS

Advice

  • Investigated and reported on the throughput capacity of the existing equipment noting areas where modifications would be required to meet the target capacities.
  • Involvement in master planning and evaluation of process options.

Design

  • Total control of the multi-discipline design required to complete the project.

Engineering

  • Responsibility for direct procurement of all process equipment and for installation and commissioning of equipment to achieve the project parameters.

Construction

  • Responsibility for contracting, directing and supervising all construction trades.

RESULTS

Startup of the new process was completed with little disruption to operations. The improved quality of grain produced together with the flexibility of Premix addition levels has improved the profitability of the facility and will allow for a future increase in production throughput to pave the way for increased cattle numbers.
